Who can become members of Singles for Christ?
Any single (ages 21-40*) can become a member of Singles for Christ. SFC is mainly a Catholic organization, but is open for membership to all Christians of other denominations. The single participants need not have any specific religious and/or spiritual background to become members.Singles for Christ draws its membership from all sectors of society - - young and old, rich and poor, etc. SFC transcends all cultural, economic, educational, social and other distinctions.* We have different ministries, so even if you're below or almost 21, you're still welcome.

How does a single become a member of Singles for Christ ?
Those who want to become members of Couples for Christ go through a seminar which is called a Christian Life Program (CLP). The CLP commences with an Orientation session, then goes through 12 talks. The talks are usually held in the afternoons or evenings and usually last about 2 1/2 hours per session.

What is the nature of the Christian Life Program ?
The CLP is an integrated course leading into a renewed understanding of God’s call to Christian singles. It is divided into 3 modules of 4 talks each. Most sessions consist of a talk, a group discussion, and some time for fellowship.The different topics discussed in the talks are as follows:
1. God’s Love
2. Who is Jesus Christ?
3. What it means to be a Christian
4. Repentance and Faith
5. The Christian Ideal: Loving God
6. Loving your Neighbor
7. The Christian Family
8. Life in the Holy Spirit
9. Receiving the Power of the Holy Spirit
10. Growing in the Spirit
11. The Life & Mission of the Couples for Christ/Singles for Christ
12. Transformation in Christ (and dedication)

Is there any cost involved?
There are no fees or monetary expenses required of participants to attend. The only investment required from them is their time and their openness.

What happens after the Christian Life Program?
After the CLP, those who finish are invited to join Singles for Christ. When they do, they are then made part of a small cell group called a Household. The household is composed of about 4 -8 singles who meet weekly for encouragement and mutual support in the Christian life, under the direction of a household leader.

What is the nature of this household ?
The purpose of the household group is to build an environment for the support of the Christian life of singles and to provide a means of encouraging and hastening spiritual growth. It promotes brotherhood and friendship. It helps people overcome obstacles to growth and maturity in their Christian life.The household meeting is held at the homes of the group members on a rotation basis. A typical meeting would involve some time for prayer, a time for sharing or discussion and finally some time for fellowship. It would normally last about 2 1/2 hours per meeting.

How about Christian formation?
Finishing the CLP is just the beginning of a long process of growth and transformation in Christ. As such, Singles for Christ provides a continuing program of formation which includes Catholic Christian teachings, recollections, and retreats.

It is so sad that I'm almost numb to it now. There have been so many school shootings since Columbine, with the most recent one in memory, the Amish School shooting. It's hard to remember a time without them. So many of them almost make me numb to them, but I should not be. I ask why then. Only God can answer that question. Although Pandora's box has been opened, I hope sometime in the future that something as horrible as this is not so commonplace, that we won't chalk it up as just another school shooting. So not to be numb to it, I will pray for all involved alive & gone and hope that in the future things will change and this will not be commonplace. I'll also encourage everyone else to pray for the students of Virginia Tech and their families.

He needs bravehearts. A team that will be dedicated, and committed to evangelization, and most importantly, one who believes in this mission that Jesus Christ set out to do 2000 years ago.

He needs a team in the first state of Delaware to do missions in Delaware and evangelize. Who is up to the challenge? Who is ready to get out of their comfort zones and be fearless? Who is ready to proclaim God’s word in a sinful nation?

Couples for Christ Builds Parishes

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — For a father of five and husband to the same wife for close to 35 years, Frank Padilla made a surprising confession.

“There are many examples of marriages saved and strengthened, of families united, of sinners turned into zealous disciples,” he said. “I am one prime example, who lived a life of sin before coming into a program that evolved into Couples for Christ. Without Couples for Christ, my wife and I would certainly be separated by now, becoming part of the statistics of broken marriages.”

Currently the international director for Couples for Christ, Padilla became involved in the movement, reflecting an unwavering commitment to his family and his faith. His work has been praised by the Vatican, which in 2005 permanently recognized the movement as a private association of the faithful, mentioning Padilla by name.

Established in the Philippines in 1981, Couples for Christ is a movement intended for the renewal and strengthening of Christian family life. It is one of many “new movements” in the Church.

Pope Benedict XVI met with representatives of new movements on the vigil of Pentecost this year, and the Register has been writing about how parishes have learned to incorporate them.

Over the years, Couples for Christ has expanded to 153 countries, a goal achieved in time for its 25th anniversary in June.

Padilla says the goal was inspired by the number of fish caught in John 21:11. He also predicts more countries joining before year’s end. According to Couples for Christ, the movement has more than 1 million members.

Couples for Christ grows through the establishment of household units in parishes. Each household unit is composed of six couples. The couples go through a 13-week integrated course called Christian Life Program. A weekly session, which lasts about 2½ hours, calls for a teaching, a group discussion and a time for fellowship.

In its well-planned structure, each household is led by a household head. Households become a unit led by a unit head. Units become a chapter led by a chapter head. And chapters become a cluster led by a cluster head. A national council provides overall direction.

The organization’s agenda is closely allied to the teachings of the Church. The Couples for Christ website succinctly states, “From its very inception, Couples for Christ has been and staunchly remains pro-God, pro-family, pro-poor and pro-life.”

The first Couples for Christ group began in the United States in 1987. A key couple is Manny Hermano and his wife, Margie, who are based in Illinois. They serve Couples for Christ in several capacities, including Manny’s role as one of seven members of the U.S. National Council, and Margies’ role as national pro-life coordinator.

“Currently CFC counts over 15,000 members in the U.S., operating in many parishes with permission of the parish priest,” Hermano said. “In Greater Chicago, we have the official approval of the two big dioceses — by Cardinal [Francis] George of Chicago and by [retired] Bishop [Joseph] Imesch of Joliet.”

In the Southeast, one of the many parishes that established Couples for Christ is St. Maximilian Kolbe in Pembroke Pines, Fla.

Restored Marriages

Peggy DeLucia, a parishioner, said restored marriages through Couples for Christ are to be expected.

“I have heard testimonies of marriages at the brink of falling apart and how Couples for Christ has helped them pull it back together, making their marriage so much stronger,” she said.

DeLucia said that she and her husband, Joe, got involved with Couples for Christ when they tried out the 13-week series after the Bible study they were involved in stopped meeting weekly.

“We discovered that this was a ministry for us almost immediately,” she said. “The weekly topics were so spiritual and meaningful that Joe and I couldn’t wait for each week to go. The praise and worship segments were so uplifting, and the hospitality truly brought the community together.”

Seggy Orlina, one of the three unit leaders of Couples for Christ in the Miami-Broward Chapter and parishioner of St. Maximilian, said, “I believe that the work of CFC is to bring the centrality of God back into family life. It also strengthens the bond of the family to church and [achieves] the realization of true communal life.”

The pastor, Father Jeff McCormick, joined the program in 1999 and expressed positive feedback.

“I was struck by the fact that fidelity to the family, the sacraments and the moral teaching of the Church were so well integrated into the building of their presentations and the forming of the home groups,” he said.

Father McCormick also observed that members became more involved in the parish. “CFC has led people to become involved in RCIA, religious education, our parish retreat ministry, stewardship, adult formation, lectors and extraordinary ministers” of Communion.

As CFC continued to grow, it diversified to involve other family ministries. Padilla explains this growth: “In 1981 we only worked with couples; then in 1993 the rest of the family came in.” Padilla added, “In 2000 we entered the very challenging work of total human liberation, the social dimension of the Gospel; then in 2003 our work of building communities among the poor shifted to high gear.”

In the Philippines, a component of Couples for Christ involves work with the poor and eradication of slums.

Branching Out

Other components include CFC Kids for children aged 4-12; CFC Youth for youngsters aged 13-21; CFC Singles for Christ for single men and women discerning their vocations; CFC Servants of the Lord for widowers; and CFC Handmaids of the Lord for widows and single mothers. Today, Couples for Christ or one of its ministries is in all 50 states.

At St. Maximilian, Father McCormick noted, “Because our parish has a large older population, the Handmaids group has been very helpful for older women who just want the friendship and prayers with people their own age.”

In addition, Couples for Christ established a pro-life ministry. The movement’s website states: “In response to the encyclical letter of Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), CFC established pro-life as a major ministry in order to raise consciousness among its members, as well as others, on the sacredness of life as a basic value rooted in the dignity of man.”

Father McCormick noted that the growth and diversification of Couples for Christ has created some obstacles.

“The biggest obstacle is getting people to understand that CFC is a Christian life program that can be applied to any state in life. So, conceivably, each family member can be part of a home group that meets their particular needs. ... Because of the tag ‘Couples for Christ’ many people who could benefit from the programs don’t think it’s for them.”

Though he has labored long and hard on the growth of CFC, Padilla attributes everything to God.

“The Lord has his eternal plan for us, and as we respond, even in our nothingness, he continually unfolds more of the plan,” he said. “God entrusts more of his work to us, thus expanding it tremendously over the last 25 years.”

Strongest Dad in the World [From Sports Illustrated, By Rick Reilly]

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay for their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots. But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars--all in the same day.

Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. on a bike. Makes taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?And what has Rick done for his father? Not much--except save his life.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs. "He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life;'' Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. "Put him in an institution.''

But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate. "No way,'' Dick says he was told. "There's nothing going on in his brain.'' " Tell him a joke,'' Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain.

Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? "Go Bruins!'' And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that.''

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described "porker'' who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. "Then it was me who was handicapped,'' Dick says. "I was sore for two weeks.''

That day changed Rick's life. "Dad,'' he typed, "when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!'' And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon. "No way,'' Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year. Then somebody said, "Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?''
How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick tried.

Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? "No way,'' he says. Dick does it purely for "the awesome feeling'' he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992--only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

"No question about it,'' Rick types. "My dad is the Father of the Century.'' And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged. "If you hadn't been in such great shape,'' one doctor told him, "you probably would've died 15 years ago.''

So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life. Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together.

They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father's Day. That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy. "The thing I'd most like,'' Rick types, "is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.''

JUST FRIENDS ?

If my sources are correct, the following scenario is played out frequently among the world of Christian singles. It happens on both sides of the gender line, but allow me to talk about it from my own female perspective.

A man meets a woman and begins to show interest in her. He asks her to spend time with him on a regular basis : hiking, biking, watchingvideos. He calls her at least once a week just to talk. He begins telling her about the deeper things in his heart and invites her to share at this level as well. He sends her mushy "friendship" cards and tells her that she means a great deal to him. He may become a little affectionate: the hugs begin to linger.

The relationship has been defined as friendship, if it has been defined at all. But after all this special attention, the woman is definitely feeling more. So she asks the guy what's going on.
To her surprise, he does a quick about-face. He insists they are just friends. After that, he avoids her, leaving her hurt and bewildered. She feels rejected - she has lost not only a romantic interest (she thought) but worse, a close and trusted friend. And she feels stupid. Did she really misread all those signals?

After I experienced this as a single woman, I asked a friend, my friend "Joe" to help me understand why guys do this. After I told him my woeful tale, he said, "I did that to somebody once."

"What? Why would you ever do such a thing?" I asked.

"We were getting too close, and it scared me," he said.

This helped me understand why the "just friends" syndrome is so widespread. A guy wants to get to know a girl, but without the pressure of dating. So he spends a lot of time with her, treating her in many ways like a girlfriend but defining the relationship as friends. This way, if it begins to look like there's no future in the relationship, or he's not ready to "get serious," he can back away with no messy breakup. It sounds like a nice arrangement - for the guy.

But that approach can be a problem for the woman. If a man tells a woman he just wants to "be friends" but he treats her like it's more than friendship, she will believe his behavior instead of his words. It sets her up for a big disappointment. Or if he invokes the "just friends" mantra after being asked about the nature of the relationship, but then promptly begins to distance himself from the friendship, again, his actions do not match his words.

He may think he's sparing her feelings by avoiding a breakup. But by defining the relationship as a friendship, he hurts her even moredeeply when he disappears. A dating relationship comes with certain risks.

But she expects a friendship - especially such a close one - to continue. Think about it this way : A broken dating relationship says only, "I don't want to marry you"; a broken friendship says to her, "I don't want/value you on any level."

Taking a woman down this path violates two scriptural principles. First, it's dishonest. The apostle Paul said that it was the way of the world - not of a godly man - to say "yes, yes" and "no, no" in the same breath (2 Cor. 1:17). A man of integrity will call a relationship what it is. Second, it is not kind or loving. The "just friends" approach may be safer for the guy, but it is harmful to the woman. In effect, he is asking her for the rewards of a dating relationship - companionship, emotional intimacy, even affection - without the responsibility. He is playing with her heart, and her heart will probably get broken.

But what if a guy does only want to be friends - or wants to develop a friendship before he decides to date?

It's pretty simple. He just treats the woman like all his other friends. He doesn't spend more time with her or call her more often than he does his other friends. He usually invites other people along when he gets together with her. He doesn't pick up the tab when just the two of them go out.

He avoids compliments that might communicate she is "special" to him. He lets her know he spends time with other women. He's extremely careful about showing any physical affection - even playful shoves or hugs.

If, after getting to know her from a safe emotional distance, he wants a deeper relationship, he tells her that he wants to date her.What if you are not thinking about more than friendship, but she asks about your intentions? Tell her you appreciate her friendship, but be honest about where you are. Above all, though it may be awkward for a while, continue to be her friend.
Years ago, I began to be attracted to a male friend. Though I hadn't really been getting any signals that he was interested in me, I knew it would help settle my emotions to hear it from him. I asked. He affirmed me as a person but told me gently - but clearly - that he thought of me only as a friend.

And then he did a wonderful thing. He kept being my friend. Though it hurt a little to learn I wasn't attractive to him in that way, it helped to know he still valued me and wanted me around. This was nearly 15 years ago, and though we have both moved to different states and married, we are friends to this day.

Women can be great friends. But guys, unless you are ready for a dating relationship, please be careful to treat us "as sisters, with absolute purity" (1 Tim. 5:2), not as girlfriends, nor as something in between. Your honesty - with yourself and with us - will be pleasing to the LORD, and prevent hurtful confusion for your sisters in Christ.

PLANNING AHEAD

And life doesn't always turn out as planned.

You don't plan for a broken heart.
You don't plan for a failed business venture.
You don't plan for an adulterous husband.
Or a wife who wants you out of her life.
You don't plan for an autistic child.

You don't plan for spinsterhood.
You don't plan for a lump in your breast.

You plan to be young forever.
You plan to climb the corporate ladder.
You plan to be rich and powerful.
You plan to be acclaimed and successful.
You plan to conquer the universe.
You plan to fall in love - and be loved forever.

You don't plan to be sad.
You don't plan to be hurt.
You don't plan to be broke.
You don't plan to be betrayed.
You don't plan to be alone in this world

You plan to be happy.
You don't plan to be shattered.
Sometimes if you work hard enough, you can get what you want.
But most times, what you want and what you get are two different things.

We, mortals, plan. But so does God in the heavens.
Sometimes, it is difficult to understand God's plans especially when His plans are not in consonance with ours.

Often, when God sends us crisis, we turn to Him in anger.
True, we cannot choose the cross that God wishes us to carry, but we can carry that cross with courage knowing that God will never abandon us nor send something we cannot cope with.

Sometimes, God breaks our spirit to save our soul.
Sometimes, He breaks our heart to make us whole.
Sometimes, God sends us pain so we can be stronger.
Sometimes, God sends us failure so we can be humble.
Sometimes, God sends us illness so we can take better care of ourselves.
Sometimes, God takes everything away from us so we can
learn the value of everything He gave us.

Make plans but understand that we live by God's grace.

Yes, SFC is a servant and lay arm of the Roman Catholic Church in the work of family renewal and evangelization, and has a number of bishops as its Spiritual Directors. The Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has granted Singles for Christ recognition as a PRIVATE ASSOCIATION OF THE LAY FAITHFUL in accordance to Canons 321-329 of the Code of Canon Law. Furthermore, SFC operates under the auspices of the Family Life and/or Evangelization Offices of parishes and dioceses throughout the world.

Those who want to become members of Singles for Christ go through a seminar which is called a Christian Life Program (CLP). The CLP commences with an Orientation session, then goes through 12 talks. The talks are usually held in the afternoons or evenings and usually last about two and a half hours per session.

The single men and women today live in a difficult age. In a new world rapid change and unprecedented evil, they need to chart the course of their own lives. The face an uncertain future, without much to hold on to since traditional support structures are starting to break up around them. Being on their own now, they experience tremendous pressure to succeed, or perhaps for most, simply to survive.

Life after school is a time for excitement and challenge. But, many single men and women soon realize that real life is very different from what they have learned in school. Many lose their idealism as the are confronted with the reality of evil in the marketplace. And so they start to compromise their values. Earning money gives them a new freedom to make choices and a new sense of power to buy and to own. But the lack of values and a sense of responsibility to go with this new freedom can lead many of them in a path away from God. The chart career paths that do not consider God as a priority and, worse, develop new activities and habits, including vices, that make them turn away from God. This will only lead them to a life of loneliness, frustrations, and despair.

We believe that God has a plan for us to live a meaningful, happy and productive lives at this stage of our human existence. Given the formidable obstacles that we face, we need a renewed relationship with God and the power of the Holy Spirit to live a new life. We need a support environment where God's plan is revealed to us and where we can draw strength from other single men and women who are committed to love and support us. We need a group where our energy and talents can be developed and put to good use to serve God and His people. We need a place where we can be formed to prepare us for the next stage of our lives, to marry or to live a single life in total dedication to the Lord.

We therefore commit to the work of personal renewal and evangelization in our milieu as part of the larger work of the Couples for Christ family and in line with it's global mission of "renewing the face of the earth."

The following embodies the beliefs and ideals of the CFC Singles for Christ as a ministry, from which flow the Christian attitudes, values and behavior, as well as its programs, teachings and approaches to Christian renewal.

1. WE BELIEVE that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we safeguard its sanctity by being pure in thought, in word and in deed.

2. WE BELIEVE that God gave us gifts and talents with which we can serve and glorify Him and which allow us to live fruitful lives. We believe in the proper stewardship of these gifts by striving to succeed in our chosen work or profession without sacrificing our Christian values and ethics.

3. WE BELIEVE in the indissolubility of Christian marriage and the importance of family life in the plan of God, in the sanctity of human life and the right of the unborn child.

Chary Araneta, a dear friend of my Dad, recently passed away from cancer. She was single but she lived a full Christian life past 50. Here are some of her text messages:

The value of persistent prayer is not that God will hear us, but that we will finally hear God.

I wish God would hold you tight. I hope Angels would keep you in sight not just to make sure you will feel right. But for you to have all the Best in Life.

Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be a stronger man.

Count your days by sunrise not by sunset. Count your life with smiles not with tears and when life will reach its autumn, you will count your age by love ones and friends not by years.

Think about this: Do not take life seriously. After all, no one has ever come out of it alive. From a philosopher named Bugs Bunny.

Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.

Prayer requires that we stand in God's presence .... proclaiming to ourselves and to others that without God we can do nothing.

Humility in the life of a believer is the mark of greatness - not because you shine when you are humbled but because when you submit to God's will, He shines through you.

Proverbs 31.9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Only the open heart receives love. Only the open mind receives wisdom. Only the open hand receives gifts and only the good ones like you receives blessings daily!

Lord, as I put my hope in you, give me the wisdom to know when to hold and when to let go and when to move on with faith.

You may not know where life's road will lead you but keep moving. God is walking with you.

Those who joyfully leave everything in God's hands will eventually see God's hand in everything!

Prayer teaches us to wait; it clears our vision, it quiets our hearts and it activate our faith; Grow like the sunrise and humble yourself like the sunset.

Give me, Lord, a quiet heart, a tranquil soul, a peaceful spirit. No matter how the world may rage around me, give me a secret place where I may go and rest in you.

Humility and inner peace go hand in hand. The less compelled you are to prove yourself to others, the easier it is to feel peaceful inside.

Go on with your life, don't look at the past with anger, don't look at the future with fear, but look at the present with awareness that you are the cutest in the planet of the apes.

God our Father, fill our hearts today with so many grateful thoughts so that no room remains for worry and fear, but only love and joy.

Release the regrets of yesterday, refuse the fears of tomorrow, and receive instead the peace of today.

After first lady Laura Bush fired the White House executive chef in February, a group of female chefs and restaurateurs sent her a letter urging her to do what no other first lady has done -- name a woman to the position.
Yesterday she did just that, selecting Cristeta Comerford, a 10-year veteran of the White House kitchen, as the new executive chef.
The announcement caps a six-month search for a chef who will help Mrs. Bush with the more frequent formal entertaining she plans during her husband's second term.
The White House executive chef presides over a staff of five full-time employees, although that number can expand to as many as 25 for an important occasion.
Bonnie Moore, a former assistant chef at the Inn at Little Washington who is president of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, a national group that had urged Mrs. Bush to name a woman, said Comerford's appointment "sends a message around the world. Women make up more than 50 percent of food service workers, but hold less than 4 percent of the top jobs. And this is the top job." Comerford, a 42-year-old naturalized citizen originally from the Philippines, will also be the first representative of a minority group to hold the post of executive chef.
"This is great news," said Evan Garcia, deputy chief of mission at the Philippine Embassy in Washington. "Ms. Comerford obviously has reached the pinnacle of her profession and she does all Filipinos proud. Maybe she can start offering lumpias in the White House." Lumpias are a popular Filipino version of egg rolls, Garcia explained.
Comerford is known for her even-tempered, unflappable demeanor, as well as an extraordinary ability to adapt to any situation, from a late-night peanut butter and jelly sandwich to a state dinner for 900, said her predecessor, Walter Scheib, who hired her in 1995 from what was then the ANA Hotel.
"She is exceptional in taking a concept and turning it into a dish," he said.
The new East Wing emphasis on food and socializing was underscored in January when well-known Washington hostess Lea Berman was hired to succeed Cathy Fenton as White House social secretary. The next month Scheib, who had been hired in 1994 by Hillary Rodham Clinton, was told to pack his whisk and go -- a decision he said reflected Mrs. Bush's desire to have her own person in the kitchen. "For better or worse, I'll always be identified as Mrs. Clinton's chef," he said.
Hundreds of applicants contacted the White House about the job. Although Comerford had been assumed to be on the short list of candidates from the beginning, it was her performance in the past several months, including an official dinner in July for 134 guests in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, that helped the first lady make her decision.
"She understands the scale of the job she's undertaking and there's a personal compatibility with Mrs. Bush," said the first lady's press secretary, Susan Whitson, in an interview.
According to Whitson, Comerford was offered -- and accepted -- the job on Friday. She and her family then left for a vacation in Mexico. She could not be reached for comment. In a statement, Mrs. Bush said: "I am delighted that Cris Comerford has accepted the position of White House executive chef. Her passion for cooking can be tasted in every bite of her delicious creations."
Comerford, who is married with one child, lives in Columbia. She holds a degree in food technology from the University of the Philippines and specializes in ethnic and American cuisine.
Scheib called his former assistant "definitely the best candidate they could have chosen." As the chef search got underway, applicants said the first lady was looking for sophisticated restaurant food. "They told me that barbecue and Tex-Mex would be very little of what they're looking for," said Richard Hamilton, former chef at the Spiced Pear in the Chanler Hotel in Newport, R.I., and a finalist for the job. "They talked about famous, high-end restaurants and showed me ideas from cookbooks. They said they wanted to be wowed."
Finding the wow factor proved difficult. The White House wanted a high-profile chef, but the job doesn't pay as much as today's ccelebrity chefs can earn with television, cookbook and endorsement deals -- none of which is allowed while working for the first family.
The White House chef has been paid $80,000 to $100,000 in recent years. But former chefs could boost their salary with overtime; new regulations no longer allow that.
Still, the job is considered an honor and certainly doesn't hurt a chef's reputation, said Scheib, who recently signed a book deal with John Wiley & Sons to write about cooking in the White House.
During the chef search, Hamilton was twice asked to cook for the Bushes, including a private dinner for 12 in June. He admits he had some problems working with the kitchen staff during his first visit "because, quite frankly, they wanted the job." His second visit, he said, "was great. We really clicked."
After news of his White House tryout leaked to his employer, Hamilton left his job and moved his family to New York. "It was hard for the owner of the restaurant because he didn't know if I was going to be staying or not. Relations got very strained," Hamilton said.
That was not the case in Dallas, however, where another candidate, Chris Ward, proudly framed and displayed an autographed menu from his dinner tryout at the White House near the entrance to his restaurant, the Mercury Grill.

Join the locals for steamed crabs, bountiful breakfast or the perfect taco at these out-of-the-way eateries

Looking for a new place to chow down? We've got seven suggestions, some of the best-kept secrets of Delaware dining. A few places that might not trip off the tongue. A couple that don't even have tables.
But all of them will satisfy your need for good eats.
They aren't the usual trendy suspects. They include a Port Penn tavern, a Wilmington Filipino grocery store, a Claymont Chinese restaurant and a Sussex County Veterans of Foreign Wars club with a breathtaking bay view.

Pilipino Grocery & Take Out

Finding this place is only part of the challenge -- once you're there, you may still go home hungry. Show up on Wednesdays, and it'll be closed. Arrive too late, and you're out of luck for dinner. But if you get the timing right, expect some nice renditions of simple Filipino finger food.2801 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, 428-6121. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun.-Tue. and Thu.-Fri.; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sat. Kelly's Tavern
Bar food at Kelly's means hot seasoned steamed crabs and shrimp.
Cracking open crustaceans has long been a popular sport in the village of Port Penn. Owner Helen Reader says the tavern, which seats about 100 people, ships in crabs from Louisiana. Mallets start flying Thursdays through Sundays. The usually large and jumbo-size crabs cost $45 a dozen.
Be patient and chill out with a frosty mug of beer while you wait -- all crabs are cooked to order. The steamer usually is going by noon every Thursday. Kelly's does accept reservations.
If you can't wait for the crab nights to begin on Thursdays, stop by Kelly's 5-9 p.m. Wednesdays. The tavern's popular steamed shrimp night has long been a bargain. Large steamed shrimp are $4 a dozen. No reservations; it's always first-come, first-served.

Bernie's The Original Italian Water Ice
Summertime is the perfect time for a slice and some ice, as in pizza and water ice.
For more than 20 years, Bernie Malloy has run the busy, curbside water ice/pizza window at the corner of Eighth and Du Pont streets. A double slice of pizza is $1.75, and water ice prices range from $1 for a small to $4 for a jumbo.
Malloy churns out 50 flavors on a rotating basis at this Little Italy stalwart. Service is quick, and Malloy is always trying to perfect a new flavor. You can get the classic lemon as well as mango, cherry, orange creamsicle, green apple, blue raspberry and watermelon.

Belin House Restaurant
Atmosphere has a lot to do with making a dining experience memorable and, in the past few years, museum restaurants have been becoming hot.
The Belin House Restaurant doesn't strive for trendiness. Instead, this 10-table, very pleasant, lunch-only spot is quietly nestled amid Hagley Museum's gorgeous, rural and historic surroundings. Painted the color of toasted sesame seeds with chocolate-brown trim, the house, built in 1818, was once the home to three generations of DuPont Co. bookkeepers.
The kitchen is managed by Fleur de Lis catering owner Ray Dycio. Longtime Wilmingtonians may remember him from his stint as executive chef at the tony, and now defunct, Positano Restaurant.
The homemade soups and chili at this private little getaway are very good, and the burgers and sandwiches, especially the classic grilled corned beef Reuben ($7.95), are hardy. Desserts ($2.90) are excellent. Save room if carrot cake or Key lime pie is available.
Private cars aren't permitted on the museum grounds, so to get to the Belin House you must go through the main entrance gate off Del. 141 and then walk or take a bus to the restaurant. (You don't need to pay museum admission to eat at the Belin House.)

Shang Hai
Secret places sometimes like to stay hidden. Shang Hai looks like just another unspectacular suburban Chinese takeout joint from the outside. Inside, the menu looks just about the same as any other -- until you ask for the "Chinese menu." Available in Chinese and (thankfully) English, it's filled with the offbeat and authentically crafted kinds of dishes that can make you forget chicken chow mein ever existed.

Taqueria El Jalisco
Panic set in earlier this year when the "taco cart" at the intersection of Union Street and Lancaster Avenue in Wilmington closed. Luckily, Taqueria El Jalisco has not only moved on, but moved up -- it has graduated from a cart to a full-service counter, tucked anonymously into the suburban Jalisco Mexican Grocery.
El Jalisco is in the Willow Run Shopping Center just off Del. 141, not far from the DuPont Co.'s Chestnut Run site.
Prices and quality are as good as ever -- an authentic taco (filled with beef, pork or tongue) is still a dreamy, chewy moment, for just $1.25. Do yourself a favor and ask for it "con todo" to get lots of cilantro and chopped onion.

Mason-Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234
Heading to a VFW Hall for food may sound weird until you see this glass-enclosed, 300-seat dining room at the very tip of Quillens Point near Ocean View.
The Sussex County clubhouse, just a few miles from Bethany Beach, has long earned admirers for its view of the Indian River Bay as well as its food.
The VFW's all-you-can-eat $7 Sunday breakfast buffet is unbeatable for both quantity and quality. The buffet usually features scrambled eggs, creamed chipped beef, stewed tomatoes, bacon, fried sausage, fruit cups and pastries. Juices such as orange and tomato are self-serve, as is the coffee. This seasonal offering, for tourists and locals alike, ends in late September.
The club also is open to the public for $9 Friday-night dinners that include fish and another entree, usually stuffed chicken breast, roast beef or ham and cabbage. Dessert and a salad bar also are available.

Born in Manila, Philippines (where his parents are from), Mig's family moved to Sydney, Australia, when he was 2 years old. Mig was studying communications at Macquarie University in Sydney when he was offered the role of Ritchie Valens in the theater production of "Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story." He decided to put his studies on hold and went on tour with the production all across Australia.
Mig has since performed in theater, commercials, television series and films. He has also been part of the bands Randy Badass & The Slickmaster Five, Lovetown, The Honkies and The Riva Band.
Mig moved from Sydney to London in 2002 so that he could look for a publishing company for his material. Brian May from the band Queen took an interest in his work and they are working on a collaboration with his band Mignition. Mig most recently starred as Galileo in London's West End production of "We Will Rock You."
Mig currently lives in London, and his birth date is January 12, 1970.
